Light And Material is the lighting design practice of Becky Lam.

Becky Lam, IALD, CLD (she/they) is an astute design professional with over 13 years in the lighting and architecture industry. A former architect, her proficiency in the field is grounded by an innate curiosity for place-making and a deep respect for craft.

Born and raised in Honolulu, Becky is ingrained with an intimate understanding of the interface between nature and urban development. She built her acumen for human-centered design with adaptive reuse projects in San Francisco and refined her lighting acuity with highly discerning clients and celebrated California modern architects. The culmination of these experiences inform her ethos of lighting design as a practice that is compelling and transformative to the human experience while also promoting sensitivity to place, culture, environment and context.

Currently based in Ann Arbor and Detroit, Becky engages on projects throughout North America specializing in lighting design that promotes human connection and community stewardship. Her work is highly detailed, collaborative and nimble, engaging with architects, landscape architects, interior designers, builders, A/V specialists and fabricators to reinforce the magic of lighting in each creative endeavor.

She holds a Master of Architecture degree from the California College of the Arts and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business with concentrated studies in human behavior and operational management. Becky is a Certified Lighting Designer and a professional member of the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD), Illuminating Engineering Society (IES), and American Institute of Architects (AIA).
