This lighting design practice aims to enrich our places with the transformative effects of lighting while always considering impacts to environment and human health. It is through the medium of light where the alchemy of architecture, nature and art are brought to life.

Lighting is essential to every space, but it is much more than a fixture and its placement. What humans observe as "lighting" could be described as the interactions between light and material. The illumination in our environment is a synchrony of these interactions with the power to create a broad spectrum of experiences — from a single point of focus to a richly layered installation.

We approach lighting design as an opportunity to explore these relationships between light and material. Our practice combines technical expertise, artful intuition and a playful sense of experimentation with the intent to illuminate and create sensation in the built environment.

VALUES

Light And Material is committed to design equity in the AEC industry (architecture, engineering and construction) where our central tenant is that design should benefit everybody. Our work is rooted in the belief that we all share the responsibility to create a more just and sustainable future. Light And Material does this by:

  • making lighting design more accessible to public benefit nonprofits and community-driven projects through at-cost and pro bono services

  • advocating for the impact of lighting as it relates to the health, safety and well-being of marginalized communities

  • promoting design education for underrepresented students and supporting professional mentorship and career development for a more diverse AEC workforce

In addition to our commitment to design equity, Light And Material also recognizes the inextricable link between equity and environment. We champion sustainability as the default in our design practice by:

  • reducing construction waste with fixture selections featuring long lifespans and product lifecycles that include carbon reduction or material recycling

  • specifying only high quality efficacious light sources paired with lighting controls to maximize the energy efficiency and lifetime of new and existing lighting systems

  • supporting the goals of the International Living Future Institute, the US Green Building Council and DarkSky International

  • promoting a holistic design ethos that evaluates the impact of each project at all scales on humans, wildlife and ecology alike

As a result, our work aims to design with intention. Lighting is both functional and feeling as it creates physical and emotional responses to space. So when lighting is designed with intention, it has the ability to transform our experience of the places we inhabit.
