As humans, what we observe as lighting could be described as the interaction between light and material.

Both are essential to our perception of illumination, shaping the way we physically and emotionally respond to space. The lighting in our environment is a synchrony of many of these interactions with the power to create a broad spectrum of experiences — from a single point of focus to a richly layered installation.

Lighting design is an opportunity to explore the relationship between light and material. This practice combines technical expertise, artful intuition and a playful sense of experimentation. Its purpose is to elevate our experience of the places and people around us.

Light And Material is the lighting design practice of Becky Lam.

Becky (she/they) is an astute designer with over 13 years working in the lighting and architecture industry. A former architect, her proficiency in the field is grounded by an innate curiosity for place-making and a deep respect for craft.

Born and raised in Honolulu, Becky is ingrained with an intimate understanding of the interface between nature and urban development. She built her acumen for human-centered design with adaptive reuse projects in San Francisco and refined her lighting acuity with highly discerning clients and celebrated California modern architects. The culmination of these experiences inform her ethos of lighting design as a practice that is compelling and transformative to the human experience while also promoting sensitivity to place, culture and context.

Currently based in Ann Arbor, Becky engages on projects throughout North America specializing in lighting design that promotes human connection. Her work is highly detailed, collaborative and nimble — engaging with architects, landscape architects, interior designers, builders, and artists alike to reinforce the magic of lighting in each creative endeavor.

She holds a Master of Architecture degree from the California College of the Arts and is a member of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) and American Institute of Architects (AIA).
